WNC Stories and Testimonials Mariah Duffin |

This is definitely the case with Mariah Duffin and her mother, Susan, who both attend Western and live together in Gardnerville with Mariah's infant daughter.
"My mom and I are really good friends and she helps me out a lot," Duffin said. "When I'm at class, she watches my baby and vice versa. I'd have a hard time doing it without her."
Her average day consists of going to class, studying, doing homework, and taking care of her daughter, which sometimes requires waking up every few hours during the night. Understandably, she doesn't have time for much else. "It gets a little tricky sometimes and it takes a little longer to get homework finished, but it is well worth it," she said. "My mom and I are both looking to better our lives."
Duffin dropped out of Douglas High School in the 11th grade. "I always did well academically, I just didn't fit in with the crowd," she said. "As you mature, you realize education is more important than what people think of you."
She earned her GED at the college two years ago and is now working toward an associate degree. Duffin's ultimate goal is to get a doctorate in marine biology and work in a lab or at an animal amusement park.
"Since I was five years old, I have wanted to study animals and help keep them safe," she said. "What lies ahead is a little daunting at times, but I think it's better sometimes to just go forward. WNC has helped me along the way."
