Project Overview
A major construction project is under way at the Carson City campus Bristlecone Building that started in May 2008 and will last for several months. The reconstruction of parking lots, sidewalks, building ramps and stairs will help the campus comply with requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act, and create a safer, more accessible campus.
Project work includes:
- Leveling the hilly handicapped parking area at the north end of the Bristlecone Building
- Replacing indoor staircases and ramps
- Installing ADA compliant lifts inside the building
- Replacing sidewalks that are too steep for wheelchair accessibility
- Creating new handicapped parking on the west side of Aspen Building and in front of the Reynolds Center to accommodate visitors/students during the project
To make this happen, several of the Bristlecone Building entrances and public areas, and areas outside the building, will be blocked off at various times between May and December of 2008. Here is what is currently known about the closures:
- The north entrance of Bristlecone that accesses the handicapped parking lot is now closed for several months while the lot is leveled and improved.
- The main east entrance to Bristlecone (by the flagpole) is closed for a lengthy period while the concrete ramp access is replaced with stairs, a lift/elevator, and a new, handicapped accessible restroom.
- The ramp and stairs to BRIS 350 and ABE/ESL will be closed at various times (unsure if it will be at the same time), and may require access from the west side of the building through Rm. 350.
- The stairs on the south end of the Bristlecone main spine that lead to the Student Services area (Admissions & Records, Counseling Services, Financial Assistance and the Business Office) will be closed for some period while a lift is installed.
Numerous offices are affected by the work, and every effort is being made to complete as much as possible of the remodel prior to August 25. Among the offices that have been relocated for the duration of the project are:
- Public Safety Office: moved to Bristlecone Rm. 131, adjacent to the new art gallery.
- Information Desk: moved to the Dini Student Center, where it will share space at the Student Center Information Desk.
- Prison Education Office: moved to Bristlecone Rm. 153
- Part-time instructor mailboxes: moved to Bristlecone Rm. 350
